June is Rivers Month and the best way to celebrate is to paddle one of Pennsylvania’s great rivers. Experience the beautiful Lackawaxen, the commonwealth’s River of the Year, on the Lackawaxen River Sojourn, June 12-14. Close to 20 miles of the middle and lower sections of this river in Wayne and Pike counties will be traversed during the three-day event, combining guided paddling, camping, recreation and a collection of educational, environmental and historical programs. Want to try a different river? Find other Sojourns or travel the rivers on your own terms equipped with information about Pennsylvania’s water trails. Bon voyage!
To help Pennsylvania residents explore the many alternative transportation options available across the state, a new PennDOT web site, www.PACommutes.com, offers a world of ways to ‘green’ your commute through car pooling, transit, biking or walking. The site includes a Match & Ride tool that helps people quickly find car pool partners, shows what public transportation options are available in each county, and, overall, serves as a one-stop shop for ways to save money on transportation while helping the environment. Need motivation to adopt these methods? National Dump the Pump Day on June 17 is a great excuse to begin greening your commute.
Create lasting memories by connecting with family and friends in the great outdoors. Participate in the National Wildlife Federation’s Great American Backyard Campout on Saturday, June 26 by enjoying an overnight adventure in your favorite park, campground, backyard or balcony. No site is too big or too small to sleep under the stars. Pennsylvania state parks make a stellar venue for this celebration.
Every year, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies perilously journey from the United States and Canada to overwintering areas in Mexico and California, making it one of the world's greatest wildlife migrations. Help protect monarchs by creating monarch waystations (monarch habitats) by planting milkweed in home gardens and other spaces.
Congratulations to June Dunn from Shillington, the winner of the monthly drawing from the SEEDS subscription list. Ms. Dunn receives a copy of the book It’s Easy Being Green: A Handbook for Earth Friendly Living.
