And the winner is…

Pennsylvanians have voted, and they have chosen trails as their top conservation cause in iConservePA’s Elect to Conserve online campaign. Carl Lorence, who champions trails and volunteerism, emerged as the winner of the Elect to Conserve campaign with 27 percent of the vote. Carl’s passion for trail building and volunteerism will be celebrated with a $5,000 donation, from a private foundation, to the Keystone Trails Association. “We’re thrilled about Carl’s victory,” said Curt Ashenfelter, executive director of the association. “We’ll spend the winnings to help hiking trails and hiking opportunities in Pennsylvania.” In honor of the candidates who did not win – Norm, Dana, Debbie, and Montrell – a $1,000 donation will be made to each of the organizations that further their respective causes: PA Parks and Forests Foundation; PA Land Trust Association; Wild Resource Conservation Fund; and, PA Environmental Council. More than 5,400 people voted in the campaign, which ran Oct. 1 through Election Day. Congratulations to Darci Stitt of Franklin who was the lucky winner of the iConservePA backyard stewardship package – a rain barrel and composter from the Spruce Creek Company.

Stay warm this winter

Don’t let high home heating costs keep you down this winter. There are many ways for Pennsylvanians to conserve dollars and the environment. Stock up on a little planning and knowledge to get you through the long, cold months. Try this strategy: turn down, seal off, save up. Go here to learn how.

Treevitalize Pennsylvania

DCNR wants to plant one million trees in the next five years and there’s a role for you! TreeVitalize Metros is a partnership of DCNR, Pennsylvania Community Forests, Penn State Extension Urban Foresters, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and local governments. The goal is to help revitalize urban areas by increasing tree cover with an army of 10,000 community volunteers trained to plant and care for the trees. By the end of 2009, the program should be operating in each of the state’s 14 metropolitan areas. In Lancaster and the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Erie and elsewhere, treemendous things are happening. Help Treevitalize Pennsylvania!

Did you know?

Each person in the United States makes four and a half pounds of garbage a day, according to the EPA. That is roughly three times the amount each person produced 30 years ago. For a thought-provoking expose on consumerism, watch this.

Spotlight on…

The Keystone Trails Association. Since 1956, KTA has worked to provide, preserve, protect and promote recreational hiking trails and hiking opportunities in Pennsylvania. Their Trail Care and Trail Crew volunteers contribute 3,000 – 4,000 hours of trail labor annually! Membership in KTA is open to anyone interested in hiking or the outdoors.
